Introduction to Williams WA, Australia
With its population of around 400 souls, the tiny Western Australia town of Williams is located in the state's extensive Wheatbelt region, some 160kms from Perth, on the Albany Highway. The Williams River runs through the settlement, with most of the buildings constructed post-1905 when the original village was moved to the river's opposite bank due to flooding. A hub for the wool, grain and cattle industries, the town has a historic trail taking visitors past its 100-year-old heritage buildings and other places of interest. One of the main attractions is the unique Jesse Martin Museum, a compilation by a local farmer of reconstructed historic buildings and their contents, such as post offices and shops, as well as a collection of old cars and farm machinery. Williams hotels include the oldest building in town - the superb if unimaginatively named Williams Hotel, built in 1871 and still in use as a comfortable base for tourists and other visitors. The old Agricultural Hall now serves as a craft shop, offering local and ethnic artefacts. other spellings: williams wahotels, willaims wa hotell, villiams wa hote, willeams wa otel
