Introduction to Warwick, Australia
Bordering fertile agricultural land and the hills of the Great Dividing Range, the historic town of Warwick lies at the junction of the major Brisbane, Melbourne and Sydney highways in Queensland. The town and its surrounding shire boast fine sandstone heritage buildings dating from the early 19th century - reminders of the area's illustrious past as a hub for the state's sheep and wool industries. Famous for its spring display of roses in parks and gardens across the town, it's also popular with visitors for its jazz and other festivals. Warwick's main attraction, however, is its October Rodeo, resulting in the town's nickname of 'Rose and Rodeo City'. The event, first staged in 1857, is famous across Australia and attracts thousands of visitors and riders alike to Warwick hotels every year. Other city attractions include an excellent indoor aquatic and recreation centre, a history museum and the Regional Art Gallery. Northwest of the town by 12kms are Leslie Dam and its lake, offering boating, swimming and fishing as well as great picnic spots.
