Introduction to Walhalla, Australia
Walhalla is a small town located on a remote, picturesque mountainside in the Australian state of Victoria. The town was built up around its gold mining industry, although since those days the population had dwindled to less than 20 permanent residents. However, there are many houses which are used as second homes by people from the city or rented out as holiday homes. There is plenty to do in the town to keep visitors occupied: stroll through the restored town centre, which boasts a number of heritage buildings; take a trip on the Walhalla Goldfields Railway as it winds through the stunning Stringers Creek Gorge; or learn about the history of the town and how it battled through tough times to enjoy its gold mining heyday at the Walhalla Heritage Precinct. There is also a chance to visit some of the old mines and get a feel of how things were in times gone by. If that is not enough, Baw Baw National Park is just a few kilometers to the west and offers visitors a wide range of outdoor activities and interesting wildlife. There is a good choice of accommodation in the area, with Walhalla hotels, holiday apartments and camp sites among the options.
