Introduction to Wagga Wagga - Gumly Gumly
Set on the Stuart Highway, around eight kilometres from the central business district of the New South Wales city of Wagga Wagga, is the tiny suburb of Gumly Gumly, home to 250 inhabitants. Amenities here include a petrol station, a general store and motels spread along the highway. The city of Wagga Wagga, set inland on the Murrumbidgee River, is just a few minutes' drive along the highway and provides a wider choice of Gumly Gumly hotels. Set in an alluvial valley, the city is a regional centre for the South West Slopes and Riverina areas, protected from the river's annual floods by an extensive levee system. It's an interesting town for its chequered colonial history, with several museums giving clues of its occasionally riotous past. It's also a hub for local markets, both farmers' and crafts, and has several large malls for everyday shopping needs.
