Tumut is a town of nearly 6,000 people in Australia's Snowy Mountains. At an altitude of only 1,600 metres, Australia's mountain ranges are not among the country's better-known attractions. However the winding road which stretches from Cooma to Tumut does give an experience more typical of the more famous ranges in the world. Travellers can get here by taking a train from Sydney to Cootamundra and then catching a connecting bus. Alternatively, those coming by train from Melbourne can catch a coach connection from Wagga. However, a hire car is a necessity on arrival since the better attractions are a drive away from Tumut hotels. In the town centre, there is fishing on the banks of the river, while those interested in architecture might like to visit Edmund Blacket's Anglican Church. It is one of several historic buildings in the town. There are a number of parks scattered around the town, the biggest of which is the riverside Pioneer Park. On the opposite side of town, golfers can play the local course on Fairway Drive.
