Originally known as German Gardens before changing its name to Belgian Gardens after anti-German sentiment during WWI, this Australian town is bursting with recreational facilities for all ages. Today, a cross of sacrifice overlooks the graves of no fewer than 222 Australian service personnel at the Belgian Gardens war cemetery. There are few apartments and corporate buildings in this scenic suburb just five kilometres from the Townsville central business district. Belgian Gardens hotels, however, are quite plentiful and boast desirable locations halfway between the central business district and the international airport. The shores of Rowes Bay are also situated immediately adjacent to this neighbourhood, while the nearest park is Soroptimist Park. It is filled with unique public art, green spaces and shady spots, and is named after a worldwide organisation seeking to advance the status of women and raise awareness of other human rights issues. The park's adventure playground was designed for all children, with or without disabilities, to enjoy. The old Jezzine Barracks now contain the North Queensland Military Museum.
