Introduction to Tocumwal, Australia
Named in the aboriginal language and translated as 'deep hole in the river', the New South Wales town of Tocumwal lies on the Newell Highway in the southern Riverina region of the state, along the banks of the River Murray. Close to the border with Victoria State, it was historically a customs hub for goods travelling between the two colonies. Tourism-wise, it's the gateway to the Murray River attractions and a prime destination for fishermen, with a reputation for gigantic Murray cod. Tocumwal hotels are represented by large pubs offering accommodation and pub grub in a friendly atmosphere. Visitors have been arriving here for 100 years or more, attracted by the sandy beaches and forests of red gum trees. Three museums, the Chrysties, the Heritage Railway Museum and the Historic Aerodrome Museum, are of interest and kayaking or boating along the Murray River are popular sports. The town also boasts a 36-hole championship golf course.
