Centred on a major agricultural region set along the mid-north coastline of New South Wales, the city of Taree lies on the Pacific Highway, some 317kms north of the state's capital, Sydney. It's a popular tourism area for its Manning River, lovely coastline and several historic towns, including Tinonee, Wingham and the beachside Old Bar. Taree has several outlying suburbs, including commercially-oriented Chatham, with its schools, shops, eateries and medical centre. Chatham hotels are found some two kilometres from the centre of town. The oldest building in town is St Paul's Church, a small, plain Gothic Revival-style meeting house, built in 1869. The Courthouse has an attractive arched frontage. The city is a major transport town on the Pacific Highway, known as National Route 1 and running along the coast into Queensland State to Brisbane. It's a popular tourist route for its stunning coastal scenery and natural beauty, with Taree a useful stopover for self-drive holidaymakers.
