Introduction to Taranna, Australia
On a chilly plateau 183kms to the west of Sydney, in New South Wales state, the small township of Oberon contains the settlement of Tarana and four other hamlets. The isolated township and its 2,500 inhabitants live amid spectacular scenery at 1,113m above sea level, a height which keeps the ambient temperature at a comfortable level year-round. Agriculture is the main industry here, with mining intermittently important as new seams of silver, bismuth and copper are discovered. Few 19th and early 20th century buildings have survived, with the exception of St Barnabas Church, one Victorian house and the Art Deco Malachi Gilmore Hall. The old railway station holds a local museum. Lake Oberon, Rockley Wier and Chifley Dam are popular local fishing spots. The Hampton State Forest and Mount Bindo are 26kms from the village, and bushwalking trails are marked in the Evans Crown Nature Reserve with its diverse flora and fauna. Tarana hotels comprise of a small selection of properties in Tarana itself and several others in the township at large.
