Introduction to Sydney - Kings Cross
Kings Cross may currently be known as Sydney's most notorious red light district, but during the 19th century it was ranked among the most prestigious suburbs in Australia's largest city for its convenient location two kilometres east of the central business district and its spectacular views of Sydney Harbour and the Blue Mountains. Some of the city's most affordable accommodations are Kings Cross hotels, but despite the rowdy reputation of the area, it is relatively safe for those travelling in pairs of groups, even at night. The northern end of the district is perhaps the safest and quietest part. Although most visitors come here for the nightclubs and adult entertainment, Kings Cross is also famous as the home of the Southern Hemisphere's biggest billboard, a 41m wide and 13m tall Coca-Cola sign which cannot be missed. The other major attraction is the El Alamein Fountain, designed in the shape of a dandelion.Visit our Sydney Travel Guide
