Introduction to Sydney - Chinatown
Australia's largest and most vibrant China Town is located in the southern part of the city's central business district, centred around Haymarket, between Darling Harbour and the central rail station. It's the ethnic district's third location, established in the 1920s with pedestrianised Dixon Street its heart and containing a plethora of Chinese restaurants and a Paifang at each end of the street. Adjacent Sussex Street is lined with ethnic shops and small grocery stores, and runs onto the main Sydney thoroughfare of George Street, with its China Town hotels. The lovely, traditional Chinese Garden of Friendship is set on the edge of the district, in Darling Harbour Precinct, and was a gift from the twinned Chinese town of Guangzhou during Australia's bicentennial year. Interestingly, other smaller China Towns have sprung up in several suburbs during the last 10 years, but the original is still the major centre for annual celebrations, such as Chinese New Year and the Festival of the Hungry Ghosts.Visit our Sydney Travel Guide
