The Sydney waterfront suburb of Barangaroo in the northwestern corner of the Australian city's central business district is currently being developed as a huge, environmentally-friendly foreshore park for visitors to enjoy. During the past century, this area, originally named Cockle Bay Point, has suffered bubonic plague, the Great Depression and protests among its workers. For decades, no visitors have been permitted in this long-time industrial space, but that will soon change once this three-stage project is completed. The Headland Park, scheduled to be finished in 2014, will be located in the inner harbour. Barangaroo Central will have several walking paths, low rise buildings, and be situated near the Northern Cove water inlet which will create a large expanse of new harbour water area. The project's southern portion will be an urban precinct where most Barangaroo hotels will be located alongside a public waterfront promenade, where visitors can walk or cycle past a museum, a library, several shops and restaurants, and about 500 apartments. Nearly a kilometer-and-a-half of the 14kms harbour walk between Anzac Bridge and Woolloomooloo will be completed and accessible for the first time in over 100 years.Visit our Sydney Travel Guide
