Introduction to Sydney - Bankstown
The residents of the multicultural community of Bankstown, Australia, speak no fewer than 60 different languages in their well set-up and thriving suburb. This district, situated 20kms southwest of Sydney's central business district, may be most famous for the bunker the Royal Australian Air Force headquarters used during the two years following WWII. Today, this well concealed bunker is now buried beneath one of the community's public parks. These parks, however, contain no shortage of other attractions which visitors are free to enjoy. McLeod Reserve is located along the busy Hume Highway, while the city gardens are divided into four different areas where native, perennial and tropical flowers grow. One area of the gardens is also entirely reserved for roses. Cricket matches frequently take place at the local oval, and the community's commercial area is centred around its railway station. Most Bankstown hotels, restaurants, and cafes are situated in this bustling area, while the community's biggest shopping centre lies directly east of the rail station. The neighbourhood is also home to Australia's second busiest general aviation airport.Visit our Sydney Travel Guide
