Introduction to Sydney - Ashfield
Few Sydney neighbourhoods are as densely populated or as multicultural as Ashfield, a scenic and well facilitated suburb situated nine kilometres southwest of the Australian city's central business district. Some Ashfield hotels are housed within some of the impressive Victorian homes and buildings which line the local streets. However, the suburb's oldest surviving building is also its first church; the consecration of the St Vincent's Roman Catholic Church took place in 1845. One of the suburb's busiest streets, Parramatta Road, is also the location of one of the finest parks in the entire metropolitan area. Statues of Mary Poppins and Philippines national hero Jose Rizal greet visitors to Ashfield Park. Proclaimed in 1885, it also features a playground, a war memorial, one of the city's oldest bowling clubs and several huge palm trees. The smaller Pratten Park hosts several sporting events and houses the district's historic society inside Thirning Villa. One of the aquatic centre's three swimming pools is reserved for water polo.Visit our Sydney Travel Guide
