Introduction to Stanthorpe, Australia
Originally an important tin mining town and later a recuperative centre for tuberculosis sufferers and military victims of mustard gas exposure during WWI, Stanthorpe is now central to the booming wine and tourism industries of Queensland's Granite Highlands region. Set 800m above sea level on the New England Highway, some 200kms from Brisbane, the town has a population of just over 4,000, with many residents involved in agriculture. Stanthorpe hotels are popular with visitors exploring the four national parks and 50 wineries within easy reach of the town. Attractions here include the local Historical Society Museum with its traditional sheep-shearer's hut, small gaol, interesting railway artefacts and huge memorabilia collection, all set in well-preserved 19th century buildings. The 110-year-old Post Office is also of interest, but the major attractions here are the nearby national parks of Girraween and Sundown with their indigenous flora and fauna, innumerable bird species and towering granite outcrops. Both parks are less than an hour's drive from Stanthorpe.
