Introduction to St Helens, Australia
St Helens is the biggest town on Tasmania's northeast coast, around two hours' drive from the island's second-biggest city, Launceston. Launceston hosts the nearest airport to St Helens. The town is conveniently located, with easy access to the Tasman Highway, which runs through the centre of town. Much of the local economy is based on fishing and timber, but there is also a growing tourist trade. The town's water sports, such as fishing, swimming and snorkelling, are just some of the pursuits which appeal to guests staying at St Helens hotels. Further offshore, guests might like to join one of the more intensive scuba-diving trips. In addition, some local operators offer five-star, sunset cruises in the bay. These cruises last for two hours and include a fantastic seafood dinner; unsurprisingly, seafood is the local speciality. The town is split into two built-up areas, to the north and south of Georges Bay respectively and connected by the Tasman Highway (Cecilia Street). The main commercial activity can be found in the northern part, with a number of shops, restaurants and bakeries lining Cecilia Street. There is also a pleasant park, Percy Steel Reserve, which overlooks the bay.other spellings: st helens otel, st halens hotell, st helen hote, saint helenshotels au, st. helens au
