Introduction to South West Rocks, Australia
Glorious scenery, great beaches and historic buildings draw a good number of visitors every year to the New South Wales town of South West Rocks. Set along the state's mid-north coastline, on the Mackay River estuary and Trial Bay, the town is home to just 4,000 permanent residents, with this number increasing in the holiday season. Busy times see South West Rocks hotels crowded with visitors. A popular beach resort for over 100 years, the town is well set up for tourists, with a brand new shopping centre, restaurants and facilities for water sports and fishing trips. Trial Bay Gaol, built from grey granite in the late 19th century as a prison for good-conduct criminals, is the most popular visitor attraction here. Inmates were used as cheap labour for the building of a breakwater, but the project was never completed and the gaol closed in 1903, reopening in 1915 to house German immigrants during WWI. Another attraction, Hat Head National Park, is home to the Smokey Cape Lighthouse, built in 1890 and comprising the lighthouse itself, a coach house and stables, and the keeper's cottage. other spellings: south west rockshotels, southwest rock otel, south wet rocks hotell, south west
