South Molle Island is one of Australia's Whitsunday Islands, which are part of the world-famous Great Barrier Reef. The 74 islands which make up the Whitsundays are most popular with visiting snorkellers and divers. South Molle Island hotels are located in the north of the island, in Bauer Bay. The bay's sheltered location means that it avoids the strong southeasterly winds which can affect other parts of the island. Most travellers get here via Queensland's Airlie Beach, situated on the mainland. Three boats depart from Airlie on a regular basis, bookable at the town's main backpacker resorts. Besides the island's water-based activities, guests have the opportunity to go on a hiking trip to Mount Jeffreys, situated in the south of the island. Avid walkers can extend the hike even further, continuing on to Sandy Bay. In fact, there are nearly 10 miles of walking trails which cover the island. South Molle Island also hosts its own nine-hole golf course, located in the northern resort area.
