Introduction to Smithton, Australia
Australia's largest island, Tasmania, has many attractive towns and villages with good visitor facilities as well as spectacular scenery and natural beauty. One such town is Smithton, set on the island's northwestern tip, on Bass Highway. Around 85kms from Burnie and 135kms from Devonport, the small port town has just over 3,000 residents and an economy reliant on dairy and beef farming, fishing, tourism and timber. Remote but thriving, the former gold rush town of Smithton makes for a great get-away-from-it-all holiday. Visitors staying in Smithton hotels will enjoy a day in the Milkshakes Hills Forest Reserve, 45kms from town. Virgin temperate forest and the button grass responsible for the tea-brown colour of the creeks make an interesting mix, and the reserve is replete with many bird species. Closer to town, on the Edith Creek Road, Allendale Gardens is another green haven with rainforest, pretty walkways and botanic gardens. other spellings: snithtomhotels, smithtom otel, smithtno hotell, smithotn hote, smitthon hotes, smihton
