The Tasmanian town of Sheffield, 93kms from Launceston and 30kms from Devonport, is famous for its fascinating murals - huge depictions of the area's early history, skilfully painted on just about every blank wall in town. Set in an agricultural valley and overlooked by Mount Roland, the former rural service town was catapulted onto the tourist trail by its 'murals' brainwave. Set below rolling hills, among manmade lakes and dams - part of the region's irrigation system, the town offers visitors respite from city life.
