Introduction to Rutherglen, Australia
Named after the Scottish town of the same name, Rutherglen is a former Victorian mining town situated on the New South Wales border. Rutherglen hotels mainly cater to wine enthusiasts since there are no less then 17 vineyards within a short drive. The largest of these is All Saints Winery, 10kms away. Those visitors who would like to learn more about the manufacture of local specialities, such as fortified wines, should visit the Wine Experience Information Centre on Main Street. Although the centre concentrates on wines, it tells the story of the town's history as well as information about nearby attractions. Main Street, boasting shops that have been virtually untouched in the last 100 years, is the most charming part of the town. Accommodation in Rutherglen can get crowded on the Queen's Birthday Weekend, when up to 20,000 wine lovers descend on the town to take part in the Winery Walkabout.
