Rottnest Island is a popular tourist destination around 12 miles from Perth, Western Australia. Travellers can get here on one of the regular ferries which depart from Perth and Fremantle. Since cars are prohibited on the island, many guests hire a bicycle on arrival. Cyclists only have to cover 15 miles to complete a full circle of the island, a reasonable distance for cyclists of all abilities. Alternatively, a day ticket allows unlimited access to the island's shuttle bus, which follows the same circular route. Ferries arrive at the island's main settlement, in Thomson Bay. Here, guests will find shops, cafes and of course, Rottnest Island hotels. The settlement is also home to the island's single pub, yet alcohol is available from other retailers around the island. Visitors exploring the island by bicycle can stop off at a number of local beaches which offer magnificent views of the coast as well as good swimming opportunities. Rottnest Island is well-known as the best snorkelling destination in the Perth region. The most interesting snorkelling is at Parker Point, where underwater plaques describe the unique marine environment which surrounds Rottnest.
