Introduction to Rockhampton - City Centre
Rockhampton is one of the oldest cities in Queensland, first established in 1855. Known locally as 'Rocky', the city has a number of attractions which cater to visitors of all ages. In addition, it's a great base for those visiting the Great Barrier Reef as well as other destinations in Central Queensland. Travellers can get here by flying to Rockhampton Airport, just 10 minutes' drive west of the city centre. Rockhampton City Centre hotels are convenient for visiting the city's information centre, housed in the historical Customs House. This building is located on the banks of the Fitzroy River, directly opposite the city's modern esplanade. As expected, many of the best shopping facilities are located in the city centre at shopping centres such as City Centre Plaza. The centre also hosts much of the city's nightlife as well as some excellent international restaurants, especially by the riverside.
