Introduction to Rainbow Beach, Australia

According to the legends of the native Kabi people, the dunes lining the coast of Rainbow Beach, about 125 miles north of Brisbane on Australia's western coast, were coloured by a rainbow spirit named Yiningie, who dove into the surrounding waters after a particularly epic clash with an evil tribesman. In fact, the variations in the colour of the sand are due to uniquely high occurrences of certain minerals. One of the most obvious examples, though not representative of any of the seven colours in the rainbow, is the black dune of ilmenite sands to the northwest. Visitors should hurry to book a stay at Rainbow Beach hotels since the rare sands are being sold to China and will be gone within two years. Fortunately, attractions such as Great Sandy National Park and the Cooloola Great Walk won't be shipped away, so natural wonders still await for those that decide to put off a visit.
