Proserpine, Queensland, is best-known for hosting Whitsunday Coast Airport, 10kms south of the town centre. The airport is served by budget flights from Brisbane, courtesy of Virgin Blue and Jetstar. There are taxis and regular buses from Airlie Beach, but those with early flights from the airport might find that Proserpine hotels are a convenient option. The town doesn't cater to tourists especially, but there are a few notable places of interest. In the west of the town, the Showgrounds are noted for hosting the Professional Bull Riders event (September) and the annual town show (25 June). The latter is popular with families who come to enjoy the fireworks and fairground rides. Visitors can learn about the town's history by heading to the Historical Museum on Main Street. It tells the story of the town's beginnings as a centre for sugar-cane manufacture and cattle farming. One of the most scenic local beauty spots can be found at Cedar Creek Falls, 20kms from the town centre. Its natural pools offer great opportunities for swimming, while the bushwalks around the waterfalls provide fantastic views of the native plant life.
