Introduction to Portland, Australia
Portland is a town of roughly 10,000 inhabitants in the Australian state of Victoria. It is the state's oldest European settlement and the shire of Glenelg's main urban centre. Situated on Portland Bay, the town grew up around the fishing industry and even now is home to a fishing fleet of around 60 vessels. Tourism plays a part in the town's economy and there are a number of Portland hotels to choose from along the bay area. The Great South West Walk stretches for 250kms and has its starting point in Portland. Not many visitors decide to walk the whole way, although the trail is perfect for short strolls and day walks as it passes through stunning, varied scenery such as cliff tops, river gorges, forests and beautiful bays. For those who want to take in the surrounding areas but in a less energetic way, there are cable trams which run along part of the route. Also of interest is the town's Maritime Museum which houses one of the world's oldest remaining lifeboats.
