Introduction to Port Hedland, Australia
Port Hedland is the biggest town in Western Australia's Pilbara region, with a population of nearly 12,000 people.

Much of the local economy is based on the steel and mining industries.

There are several Port Hedland hotels which cater to out-of-town workers and their families.

As such, casual visitors may find rooms hard to come by since they are often full with these semi-permanent residents.

Port Hedland town centre stretches for around four miles along the waterfront, which is lined by a series of pleasant park areas.

Further recreation is provided by the Racecourse and Greater Sportsground, which hosts regular horseracing events.

Those who would like to learn more about mining history could visit the Don Rhodes Mining Museum on Wilson Street.

Travellers can get here by flying to the town's international airport, around nine miles from the town centre.

There are regular domestic flights from cities such as Perth, Brisbane and Darwin, while an international connection from Bali is operated by Skywest.
