Introduction to Port Fairy, Australia

Port Fairy is a picturesque coastal town located in the southwest of the Australian province of Victoria. This small town of just over 2,500 inhabitants is on the Princes Highway, approximately 300kms from the Melbourne. The town was built up around the fishing industry, and while fishing remains one of the key sources of economy, tourism now also plays a big role. Visitors are attracted to Port Fairy due to its wide streets lined with 19th century cottages, old stones churches and many other fine architectural examples. As one of the state's busiest fishing ports, the town offers visitors the chance to watch fishermen unload their daily catch or they can even try their luck by heading out on a guided fishing tour. For those who prefer to stay on dry land, there are some excellent walking trails in the vicinity. The town also boasts a number of antique, boutique, art and craft shops, while one of the country's largest music festivals, Port Fairy Folk Festival, is held once a year in March. The town has a number of accommodation options, with most Port Fairy hotels located in the town centre or by the river.
