South Australia's fifth biggest city is Port Augusta, situated on the Eyre Peninsula's east coast, 322kms north of Adelaide. This community is known as Australia's crossroads because of its location near two of the country's major highways, and many guests at Port Augusta City Centre hotels only stay briefly on their way to other destinations. However, this Spencer Gulf community is well worth further exploration. The city centre is situated on the east side of the narrow Spencer Gulf, the dividing line between the east and west sides of town. The former water tower is now a lookout from which visitors can see the entire town. Port Augusta is also known as the gateway to Australia's outback, and over 500,000 people were introduced to the outback way of life at the Wadlata Outback Centre in 2006 alone. That same year, over 100,000 people admired the view from the Australian Arid Lands Botanic Garden, the plants at which need very little water.
