An oasis in the desert, Newman is a residential town of more than 4,000 people which mainly caters to those working in the local mining industry. As such, there is plenty of entertainment in the town, such as a shopping centre, a handful of restaurants and a number of Newman hotels. Those looking for outdoor recreation can visit the Opthalmia Dam, 15kms east of the town centre. In such an arid region, the dam provides rare opportunities for swimming, picnicking and viewing beautiful sunsets. In the north of the town, Eagle Rock Falls consists of two waterfalls and offers similar recreational opportunities even closer to the centre. Around 20 minutes' drive to the north, Mount Newman offers the most spectacular views of the surrounding region. Hikers can reach the summit from the highway or drive halfway up the mountain by four-wheel drive, and then hike from there. Those taking the longest route from the highway can expect the journey to take four hours there and back. The local airport is 12kms south of the town centre, with regular flights departing for Perth.
