Introduction to New Norfolk, Australia
Situated in a scenic location on the banks of the Derwent River, New Norfolk hosts some of southeast Tasmania's finest examples of pioneer heritage. Since its early days, the town has spread to both sides of the river, but most historical attractions can be found on the south bank. This part of the town is home to the oldest Anglican church on the island, St Matthew's, first-established in 1823. The church is located on the corner of Pioneer Avenue and Bathurst Street. New Norfolk hotels include the oldest lodging in Australia, which still operates to this day. Guests can learn about the town's history at the Old Colony Inn Museum, Montagu Street. Outdoor types will enjoy the scenic riverside walk which starts near the Blair Street Bridge. It follows the bend in the river through the Scenic Reserve and Tynwald Park before finally looping back to the town centre.
