Situated a 35-minute drive from Hobart International Airport, Murdunna is fast-becoming one of Tasmania's most popular destinations. Once a quiet seaside town, it has recently seen an influx of weekend visitors thanks to its proximity to the island's capital. Murdunna hotels range from luxury five-star residences to budget beachside cabins. Even the fanciest lodgings allow guests to bring their own food and join communal barbecues. Around five kilometres west of the town, Sommers Bay hosts most of Murdunna's typical coastal recreation. Here, guests can find secluded beaches and fishing opportunities. Farther afield, Fortescue Bay is an even more peaceful spot. Here, a sheltered inlet with unspoilt beaches offers plenty of sailing and bushwalking as well as the chance to see Australia's highest coastal cliffs. The bay is around 35kms from the town, accessible via an unsealed road from near Port Arthur. Travellers can visit the Devil's Kitchen, a 60-metre deep rock formation, on the way.
