The popular mining city of Mount Isa in the northwest of Queensland is a haven for those who like water sports, recreation and bird watching. The peaceful nature of the Leichhardt River and artificially made Lake Moondarra are perfect for getting out into the relaxing environment of nature. Hotels in Mount Isa range from plush city centre accommodations to cabins in the nearby forests. Visitors can take a look at the mines, particularly the Hard Times Mine, and can see exactly what goes on in the tin, iron ore and lead mining industry. There is a new sports complex where visitors can go swimming and get some exercise, as well as Buchanan Park, which provides a pleasant outdoor spot to lounge in the grass or take a walk. The town has little that will excite well-versed travellers. Its dining scene is extremely average, and its nightlife typical of working-class Australian towns in the countryside.
