Introduction to Mount Gambier, Australia
Mount Gambier is a South Australian city which is located halfway between Adelaide and Melbourne. The city is a popular base for visiting attractions in surrounding areas, many of which were formed after volcanic activity many years ago. In fact, the city takes its name from a crater named after Admiral James Gambier, a sailor who first sighted it. Blue Lake is the city's most popular tourist attraction, located on the southern outskirts of the city. Blue Lake changes from grey to deep blue during the year and is formed from another volcanic crater. Guests staying at Mount Gambier hotels also have the opportunity to visit limestone caves and sinkholes nearby. Umpherston Sinkhole is centrally-located and is suitable for visitors of all ages. It is home to a pretty garden and a number of possums. The fastest way to get here is by flying from Adelaide with REX. However, there are also direct buses from Adelaide, as well as a train/bus combination from Melbourne, via Warrnambool.
