Introduction to Moruya, Australia
The country town of Moruya lies along its namesake river's banks, just over 300kms south of Sydney. As one of the Eurobodalla Coast's oldest communities, the town features many historic buildings that cannot be found elsewhere in the region. The local historical museum's building was first constructed in 1875, but it received an external facelift in 1982. Constable Miles O'Grady's grave lies in the local cemetery. The infamous Clarke gang killed the constable during an 1866 shootout. The family home of Francis Flanagan, who leased farms to many of the Irish immigrants who settled here, still stands. The same is true of the stately Kiora House, built from the area's first convict-made bricks between 1833 and 1835. A descendant of the original Kiora House residents lives here today. Visitors can also fish, canoe, boat or water-ski on the river. The two relaxing 30-minute walks in the Bush Orchestra take visitors past plaques of several significant Christian spirituality figures. A weekly country market is held each Saturday morning behind one of the Moruya hotels.
