Introduction to Mortlake, Australia
A volcano called Mount Shadwell overlooks the town of Mortlake, in Victoria's Western District, north of the Great Ocean Road. Although Mount Shadwell has not erupted for at least 5,000 years, the light green olivine crystal emitted from its volcanic bombs remains scattered throughout the town today. This town with just under 1,000 residents is now known as Australia's olivine capital, but many of its buildings were constructed with another local substance, bluestone. Many of these bluestone buildings date from the 1850s and 20 of them can be seen up close during a walk along a self-guided history trail that has been assembled by high school students. A rose garden blossoms in the town centre's recreation reserve, which features tennis courts, picnic facilities, a swimming pool and a playground. The large Woolongoon country garden and Gallery of Wildlife Art, featuring artwork by renowned wildlife artist Richard Weatherly, can both be toured by appointment only. In addition to a handful of Mortlake hotels, the town has a bed and breakfast homestead and a caravan park.other spellings: nortlakehotels, mortlaek nsw otel, mortlkae hotell nsw, mortalke hote nsw, morltake nsw
