Introduction to Mornington, Australia
The seaside town of Mornington was once the main hub of the long peninsula which shares its name. Today, this picturesque community 60kms southeast of Melbourne may be one of many popular holiday resorts in the peninsula, but it maintains a historic charm which can be found in few other places. As with elsewhere on the peninsula, established commercial Mornington hotels in the town are outnumbered by small motels and large shared beach houses. The town centre eases into its shoreline, whose pier has been a popular strolling and fishing spot since it was first constructed in the 1850s. The coastline is dotted with red bluffs, from which visitors can see the colourful bathing boxes on the sands of Mills Beach and the yachts sailing along Port Phillip Bay. The peninsula's main art gallery is situated here and features about 1,200 works of art in its permanent collection, ranked among Australia's finest. A local history exhibit is displayed in the former post office, but bikers will likely enjoy the World of Motorcycles Museum more. The Old Courthouse, near to which the state's longest street market, Main Street Market, takes place each Wednesday, is the oldest in Victoria.
