Introduction to Moama - City Centre
A bridge across the Murray River separates the New South Wales community of Moama, in the state's southern Riverina district, from the bigger Victoria town of Echuca. The Murray River banks are also where most Moama City Centre hotels and holiday parks are located in this popular holiday destination, two and a half hours north of Victoria's state capital, Melbourne. Tourists from Victoria used to flock to Moama to play poker machines during the 1980s, when gambling was illegal in their own state. Today, the town features many more tourist attractions, such as its 36 hole Rich River Golf Club course and local lawn bowling club. The local courthouse, a former bank, and a former police sergeant's residence, are all historic buildings dating back to the 1880s. A war memorial was recently constructed in the town, and the Heartland Speedway can be found not far away. Aside from regular holiday periods, the town's busiest time of year coincides with a water ski race called Southern 80, which takes place each February. Visitors can also rent houseboats along the Murray River or tour the many surrounding wineries.
