Introduction to Mittagong, Australia
The peaks of two extinct volcanoes called Mount Alexandra and Mount Gibraltar flank the New South Wales town of Mittagong. This town, known as Mitta for short, is considered the gateway to the state's Southern Highlands for visitors arriving from Sydney, 110kms away. The first of the Mittagong hotels was built in 1827, but many more accommodations have opened in the community during the following centuries. The Gothic stone St Stephen’s Church of England lies immediately next to the Southern Highland Visitor Centre. The current town library is housed inside a building that was originally constructed as the town's first public school in 1848. The sandstone building containing Minnikin Lodge Gallery dates back to 1837, while unique works of art are also displayed in Bandamora Art Gallery. A scenic reserve filled with birdlife, bushwalks and picnic spots surrounds Lake Alexandra, an artificial lagoon. A children's play area is located next to the large selection of unique books for sale at the Antiquarian Bookshop, an attraction in its own right.
