Introduction to Millicent, Australia
The South Australia rural community of Millicent was named after the daughter of Adelaide's first archbishop, who lived to be 94 years old. The first of the Millicent hotels opened in 1872 and remains open today. Another hotel was named after and boasts a display of a stuffed Tantanoola tiger behind glass. The park surrounding the local swimming pool, ranked among Australia's best and known as a swimming lake, is just one of several green spaces surrounding this community situated 400kms southeast of Adelaide. Its tourist information centre shares a building with the National Trust Museum, whose centrepiece is the town's first primary school. This museum, considered one of South Australia's finest rural museums, also features many aboriginal artefacts, horse-drawn vehicles and antique farm equipment. Several early aboriginal artefacts have been unearthed at the Wyrie Swamp archaeological site, including some of Australia's oldest boomerangs. Nearby Tantanoola Cave may be the only wheelchair-accessible cave in the country.other spellings: milicent hotell, millisent otel, millicemt hote sa, millicant hotle, millicenthotels
