The first settlers in the quiet country town of Miles were railway workers who came to this area of Queensland after construction was delayed on a rail line from Brisbane, 339kms east of this village on Dogwood Creek. In addition to many Miles hotels, the town has its own Olympic-sized swimming pool and shopping centre. However, the community's biggest attraction is its large historical village, where over 20 19th century buildings line Pioneer Street. A bakery, a pub, a general store, a hospital, a blacksmith shop and old Australian Bank of Commerce are among the pioneer buildings in this historical village which has its own museum. An IT centre, a library and an art gallery can be found inside the far more modern Dogwood Crossing building, which bears the town's original name. Each September brings the town's annual wildflower festival, held during the month when the many wildflowers which bloom around this Western Downs community are at their most numerous.
