Introduction to Melbourne - Southbank
Southbank is a district in Australia's cultural capital, Melbourne. It sits beside the Yarra River and contains some of the most fascinating and exciting entertainment landmarks in the city, as well as a plethora of expensive high-rise apartments. Southbank hotels can be expensive, which is largely due to the area's convenience and up-market ambience. There is a beautiful promenade which meanders along the banks of the Yarra River, just across from the central business district. This is the site of the famous Sunday Arts and Crafts Market, and is also home to various buskers and chalk artists, along with various cafes and restaurants. There is also the Southgate Arts and Leisure Centre, which adds to the attractions available for tourists. The Malthouse Theatre is another of the main sites in the district, along with the old Victoria Barracks, National Gallery of Victoria, Australian Centre for Contemporary Art and the Victorian College of Arts. There is a famous footbridge now connecting Southbank with the inner city of Melbourne.Visit our Melbourne Travel Guide
