Introduction to Melbourne - Saint Kilda
Located six kilometres to the south of downtown Melbourne, the suburb of Saint Kilda is a popular haunt for locals and tourists alike. It is more than just a daytrip destination though, as Saint Kilda hotels cater for many thousands of visitors every year. Because the inner city suburb boasts the best beach for Melbourne's main residential areas, it has been a popular destination since the middle of the 1800s, especially for the social elite population of the city. However, the beach is just the beginning of the suburb's attractions. The Palais Theatre and the National Theatre are the main music venues in the area, while the esplanade and pier dominate the tourist sites. At the pier, the recently renovated Saint Kilda Pavilion is one of the most historic buildings in the surrounding region. For shopping, visitors can always travel to Acland Street, which houses the best shopping and restaurant opportunities in the area, including some spectacular cake shops.Visit our Melbourne Travel Guide
