Introduction to Melbourne - East Melbourne
The appropriately named suburb of Melbourne East is situated east of Melbourne, Australia's central business district and in 1837, was one of the first areas of Australia's second biggest city to be planned. Today, Melbourne East is one of the city's most sought after residential areas, and Melbourne East hotels are equally sought after for the neighbourhood's quiet location and close proximity to many tourist attractions. Victoria's Parliament House is the biggest of the many state government buildings in Treasury Place, while many of the former churches which line nearby Cathedral Place now house office buildings. A cottage constructed in 1755 by the parents of Captain James Cook was transported from England to Melbourne East's Fitzroy Gardens in 1934. Jolimont, an even smaller area within Melbourne East, is the home of Australia's biggest and best known sporting venue, the Melbourne Cricket Ground, and the equally famous Yarra Park.
