Introduction to Melbourne - Carlton
Victorian architecture, a Little Italy district and European-style squares are all hallmarks of Carlton, an inner city suburb of Melbourne that is set just two kilometres from the downtown business district and Carlton hotels. Also in the suburb is one of Australia's few UNESCO World Heritage sites, the Royal Exhibition Buildings, set in lovely Carlton Gardens. The exhibition centre and its gardens are considered to be of botanical, scientific, aesthetic, historic and architectural significance to Victoria State. Lygon Street is the Italian heart of the district, with cuisine and culture its focuses. Numerous Italian eateries rub shoulders with delis, gelaterias and coffee shops serving rich cakes and strong Italian coffee. The Victorian structures of note here include the Carlton Club, with its carved kangaroo gargoyles and polychrome arches, and the Renaissance-style Post Office and Police Station.
