Introduction to Melbourne - Burwood
Burwood is a Melbourne suburb dating back to the 1870s. Nowadays, it is dominated by a Deakin University campus. The campus is the biggest in the university and caters to around 19,000 students. It is a 35-minute drive from Melbourne Airport via the Tullamarine Freeway. Alternatively, visitors can get here by taking tram route 75 from the city centre, heading towards Vermont South. Many visitors use Burwood hotels in order to visit the university or see residents at one of the three local retirement homes. Unsurprisingly, there are plenty of options for cheap food given the student population, especially between Station Street and Milford Avenue. There are ample opportunities for recreation around the suburb. Backing the university and bordering Box Hill district, Gardiners Creek Reserve features a dual-purpose track that is suitable for bicycles and pedestrians. Golfers can play Wattle Park golf course, situated on Riversdale Road. Meanwhile, the junction of the Burwood Highway and Warrigal Road hosts the district's main shopping centre.
