Introduction to Melbourne - Brunswick
One of the most historical suburbs in Melbourne, Brunswick is littered with reminders of its rich heritage. Hoffmann's Brickworks' chimneys have listed-heritage status and are one of the suburb's most recognisable features. Nowadays, the district is more recognised for its ethnic influences than its architecture courtesy of the Lebanese, Italian and Greek influxes. For those interested in Mediterranean cuisine, it can be one of the best places to eat out in the city, especially along Sydney Road, where all budgets are catered for. In addition to eateries, Sydney Road is lined with nightlife venues featuring music such as punk, hip-hop and electronic. Brunswick hotels can get crowded in late February when the Sydney Road Street Festival takes place, a precursor to the more formal Brunswick Music Festival (March). The latter focuses on world music, especially roots and blues. The suburb is not well noted for its large open spaces, but some of its small community parks are worth visiting. Randazzo Park on Albert Street has won awards for its modern design. There are four local train stations which serve the district, with services departing from Flinders Street and Southern Cross stations in the city centre.Visit our Melbourne Travel Guide
