Introduction to Marla, Australia
Marla Roadhouse is a small settlement 1,082kms north of Adelaide and 160kms south of the border between South Australia and the Northern Territory. The name of this isolated and tiny service town with just 70 permanent residents is said to be an aboriginal term for kangaroo, and visitors just might encounter a few of these unique Australian animals during their stay here. Marla hotels include a caravan park and a large motel. A restaurant, a general store, a bar, a police station and a service station where fuel is available 24 hours are among the other available services. East of the lands of Anangu Pitjantjatjara and directly across from the new Darwin railway line, the town offers visitors the chance to watch the numerous trains pass by and the sun descend below the Australian outback. Wildflowers growing along the rail tracks provide some welcome colour to this desert outpost and an opal mining community called Mintabie lies 33kms away, just west of the Stuart Highway.
