Introduction to Mannum, Australia
Over a century ago, paddleboats were the main means of transportation in the South Australia settlement of Mannum. Today, vessels in all shapes and sizes sail along the Murray River, with the town on its west bank. There are three Mannum hotels in this community 85kms east of Adelaide, but many guests prefer to hire houseboats as this is Australia's houseboat capital. Some houseboats can seat up to a dozen people, and linen and driving lessons are usually available. Cruises aboard restored paddleboats such as the Murray Princess and the Marion are also popular. Another paddleboat, the Mary Ann, is now permanently docked in the town's recreation park. Wakeboarding, waterskiing and canoeing along a scenic trail are other popular water sports, especially in summer. Activities on dry land include visiting a gem and mineral museum, playing a round at the local golf club and indulging in retail therapy at the countless shops selling unique crafts and antiques. The town's population increases to from 2,000 to about 10,000 people in summertime.
