Introduction to Maitland, Australia
An old steam train and 15 telegraph poles stand near Maitland's tourist information centre. The poles represent the 15 major floods which occurred in this Lower Hunter Valley city between 1819 and 1955. Today, a levee protects this city 166kms north of Sydney from future floods. Visitors may stay in one of the many upscale Maitland hotels or its equally numerous lower budget motels. More courageous visitors may even spend the night in the city's imposing sandstone prison, first built in 1848 and used as a prison until less than two decades ago. Guided prison tours are also available. Although water is no longer pumped at the Walka Waterworks Complex, this Italianate brick building receives more visitors than ever before as an outdoor museum and live entertainment venue. Around 12kms of surrounding cycling and walking trails make up a recreation and wilderness reserve. Trains travel along the complex's two-kilometre track each Sunday and are the main theme of the city's Steamfest festival, held each April.
